"The delicacy and sinuous Art Nouveau quality of his earlier drawing has been superceded by bold, geometric lines. The elements of primitivism and caricature, always present to some extent, come to the fore. Wright's late figures, with their elongated bodies and extended hands and feet, evoke both the primitivism of early medieval portraiture and the Expressionism of the 1920s. The protagonists in the biblical drama re-imagined in glass at St. James, Wilkinsburg, are archaic and modern, their serene, sorrowful, or triumphant faces breathtakingly intense, as they look at us and at one another."
